QUESTION FROM FB: So does this mean that King Charles Cavaliers can be trained as a medical alert dog??
I've been thinking of eventually adopting/training a medical-alert service animal, but due to my level of strength & cuteness-appeal, I'm much more partial to KC Cavalier Spaniels, Yorkies & cats... but I was under the assumption that an Abyssinian Cat or KC cavalier would be too small to be considered a serious service animal.
Does the public take it as seriously as compared to a golden, poodle or shepherd?
ANSWER FROM RHONDA:Thank you for your inquiry it is greatly appreciated. I do use Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, as they are very intelligent, sensitive to our emotions yet bold and playful as well as very smart. Not mention how cute they can be! I don’t use many small breeds, but this one breed that I do use. As for you thinking about getting a pup for a pet that is fine, but if decide that you want to have a pup to be a working dog than I would not recommend that you do not go out and purchase a pup. If you are truly are considering having a service dog for your own info I often will test over 30 pups before deciding on one that will be put into the training program. Saying that, the pup is in evaluation and can at anytime be pulled from the training program and be put into a pet home. A service dog cannot just be picked out of a litter because he/she is cute.
I do love cats and I have many! I do not work with cats for service animals. The Abyssinian cats as a breed, are very intelligent, I know as I had one for many years. Saying that I do not consider them a candidate for service animal. Please understand that I do not work with cats, as I believe that a cat cannot work within the same capabilities as a service dog.
Thank YOU!
